“Students who acquire large debts putting themselves through school are unlikely to think about changing society, Chomsky suggested. “When you trap people in a system of debt . they can’t afford the time to think.” Tuition fee increases are a “disciplinary technique,” and, by the time students graduate, they are not only loaded with debt, but have also internalized the “disciplinarian culture.” This makes them efficient components of the consumer economy.”— Noam Chomsky

This sums up exactly why I don’t regret not going to college, even though I was offered a $20,000 academic scholarship. (I didn’t just say fuck it, there were other reasons mostly of financial stature - not having a car/license, not being able to afford housing, books, food, or transportation, among others)
I know so many people in my life are disappointed that I didn’t. But I prefer to read and educate myself through the lens of many perspectives and get out in the world and see it (and all the corruption that schools don’t mention) for myself.

This is far too simplistic to be real.
Many students of color and poor students incur student loan debt because they do not have support systems that will allow them to go to school and work full time or pay their tuition. That does not mean that these students do not think and that they are not focused on changing the world.
It may mean that they are saddled with debt for the rest of their lives with no realistic hope of ever being free of it and that they live in a state of poverty that their education presumably would have helped them escape, but they are still thinkers and capable of making social justice a priority in their lives. It is the rare college student who does not incur student debt and this quotation is much more elitist than it seems.
